Australia, land of kangaroos and smart cards . . .

According to the Australian AP of February 4 (I think that's already yesterday over there), a couple of companies named Quicklink Card Systems Ltd and ERG Ltd have launched a first-generation smart card for use as an electronic purse. It has a PIN, but the PIN does not provide security for the cash function -- only any personal information that may be held by the card in the future. 450,000 cards were issued last month and 250,000 this month. The issuers predict they will be "in widespread use throughout Australia by the middle of this year."

They evidently know they need security for this stealable card: "We're also investigating biometrics; using a finger or thumbprint instead of a PIN number." I wonder who has the inside track on fingerscanning in Australia? Brad, do you remember?
