The fight against Hitler is an existential fight for humanity. IF Hitler should win, humanity will enter a dark age- and America cannot let that happen." But don't take my words on it- a day late and a dollar short- look at the public opinion in the US, which was soundly PRO involvement even before Pearl: Public opinion polling was still in its infancy as World War II approached, but surveys suggested the force of events in Europe in 1940 had a powerful impact on American ideas about the war. In January of that year, one poll found that 88% of Americans opposed the idea of declaring war against the Axis powers in Europe. As late as June, only 35% of Americans believed their government should risk war to help the British. Soon after, however, France fell, and in August the German Luftwaffe began an all-out bombing campaign against Great Britain. The British Royal Air Force valiantly repelled the German onslaught, showing that Hitler was not invincible. A September 1940 poll found that 52% of Americans now believed the United States ought to risk war to help the British. That number only increased as Britain continued its standoff with the Germans; by April 1941 polls showed that 68% of Americans favored war against the Axis powers if that was the only way to defeat them. Sept 1940- 52% favored intervention I get it, people have a hard time seeing into the future. I'm not sure why, since the future is so often a repetition of the past, but let's let that be. You could say the same thing you are saying, about sHitler- and why it wasn't necessary to oppose him- when it was clear as hell he was a fascist fuck. You fight against fascist fucks because they can be the end of humanity as we know it. Civil wars, petty squabbles- sure- we can be isolationist about those. But a mad man taking over Europe? Bent on the destruction of the UK? I don't think so. History has already proved me right on this- so I'm not sure what we're arguing about. Hitler had to be stopped- sooner would have been better, and clearly sooner would have happened had the US intervened earlier.
