From those societies I am familiar with the answer is yes

I would recommend to any one to read it, after reading parts of it that for me are very very interesting, more so that not a lot has been changed, which makes reading the Hebrew Bible or other relevant books even more interesting from a philosophical point of how societies tried to survive and how degraded today's societies are with all the bells and PR non sense.

As the book was written by an Israeli academic within an Israeli University in Beer Sheba, makes me even prouder,

further, the book describes the efforts of the Jewish community to punish and marginalize the criminals from within to the extent that many criminals choose to stand trial before a non-Jewish court.
