OFF: I've been kind of avoiding this thread for the last few days, since it has degenerated into a lot of useless speculation. Imagine my surprise this morning when I tuned back in to an interesting philosophical discussion.

Gotta put in my two cents worth. My gut reaction is to off anyone who commits a planned, pre-meditated murder. If someone killed a member of my family, I certainly would want to kill that person in return. The Old Testament condones such punishment. Under the new paradigm, however, I feel compelled to obey the golden rule: "Do onto others as you would have them do onto you." If I killed someone, I wouldn't want to be killed in return. Therefore, I've always been very ambivalent about the morality of capital punishment. It is a relic of a past where brutal punishment was the norm, and as practiced today, does little to deter crime. The only way capital punishment would deter other murders is if it was swift and commonplace.
