You could possibly put non-central air in, to give you a room or two to go in to on the hottest days without spending as much upfront and without spending on keeping it running all the time.

I had a 5 ton unit with a top f the line programmable thermostat and paid 15,000 with a debit card for 2,000 and the thermostat No Charge. Probably a wash at $12,500.00.

Some of the labor involved deals with making the existing unit and its size compatible with the new unit, especially if you are adding the evaporator core into the space that only had a heating unit. The metal working portion of HVAC is very expensive to design and fabricate.

Does your house have ceiling fans in every room. That is inexpensive, attractive, and can help a lot during those two hot months.

Mitsubishi makes an A/C unit that installs either in the wall or ceiling and the rest of the unit is outside. Perfect to cool off a living room or bedroom. They also can heat.

Our Wisconsin home has old window units. As they go our or become inefficient, I'll add them to our Master bedroom and guest bedroom. hvacdirect.com
