There have been several times in the past 2 or 3 years where S3 and Intel were rumored to be very close. There have been rumors on this thread before that Intel was going to pick up S3 right after the government ok'd the Intel/Chips deal. It is also possible that Intel was snoozing as pointed out by Mike, just like IBM once did in regards to PC's OS. We will never know until after the fact, and then it is too late to profit from it.
