John, good question. I think the current rally is due to a change in sentiment in the tech. sector and thus PE expansion. The tech stocks were buried 4Q97 and this current rally is to correct for some of this overreaction. The fact Intel beat 4Q estimates was very important psychologically.

Another important factor for Intel right now is that at least for 1Q98, Intel is gaining on the competition. AMD/Cyrix are having yield problems and Intel will be increasing its market share over the next few months. Therefore, I think people are feeling comfortable about Intel meeting 1Q98 estimates. I hope anal-ysts don't start increasing 1998 estimates because that will make it tougher to beat.

Personally, I think 2H98 is setting up to be strong growth (sequentially & year-over-year) for Intel.
