Murderers doing life without parole have little to lose by killing within the prison system. Too frequently they do just that.

I feel that capital punishment is self-preservation. It is a purging of the societal "gene pool".

Sure it sounds crude. But my perspective is that this society only exists because we all generally respect one another's rights and freedoms. It is a social contract that we are all bound by and the moment that we break it, we must make restitution, most especially in cases of violent crime where the rights of victims are too oft superseded by the rights of the perpetrator.

Now on the issues of non-violent crime, I believe I am quite enlightened... I like the idea of victim restitution and public shame as a tool to create an adherence to social norms of respect.

As for reaching out emotionally to perpetrators of violent crime, I hope you never have to face having a loved one victimized by one.

Violent crime occurs because those who commit them think they will not pay the ultimate price for their crime. They can take their chances and if caught, but sentenced to an overcrowded prison where they will receive early release to make room for new arrivals. At least that is how it is working here in DC.

Just as many people believe in God out of "fear" of potential repercussions for not believing (better safe than sorry), people should fear the punitive power of their fellow members of society by whose empowerment capital punishment is carried out.

Regards,

Ron

I think your last line says it all.
"But that's just my warped perspective as an artist and kook. "

Jeff,
<way off topic>
>>>>>But that's just my warped perspective as an artist and kook<<<<

Jeff,you stated you were an artist, I just wanted you to know that before RMIL came into my life , I was painting at least 6 hours a day....in 1992 I was lucky enuff to have some stuff shown in a group showing which included Andy Warhol silkscreens. A good friend of mine is Ed Paschke and another Chicago artist Bob Novak....both graduated from the Art Institute in Chicago,class of '57. They studied under Isabelle MacKinnon who was a student of Hans Hoffman....so, Philosophically, hoffmans' ideas about reproducing the 4 dimensional universe on a flat surface are an intergral part of my thinking.
I'm drawing in spurts,but saving it up to paint....I hope to put some of my stuff on the web-site....I'd love to see your stuff too,or just rap.....My buddy wrote a book called 'Revolution of the Mind' about Andre' Breton, he also was the editor for Jack Henry Abbotts "in the Belly of the Beast"....which was very relevant to todays discussion.....can't wait for the squeeze to happen so we can get back to our other obsessive-compulsive disorder....painting!!!
All the best!
