Terrence, I am sure that there were many factors in the first Iraqi invasion. I suspect that oil and danger to Israel were probably both factors. Nonetheless, we did definitely signal Saddam diplomatically that we would do nothing if he took Kuwait, and therefore tricked him, in a way.

Saddam is so evil that I am not going to put up much of a defense for him. He has hurt his own people greviously. If there is an argument to be made for the positive benefits of the brutality of war, Saddam would be it for me. At the same time, we need SOMEWHERE to test our new weapons, and he makes a convenient target.
