I think it is a misinterpretation to say that "Netscape dropped Java".

The announcement said that nscp would stop developing a JVM and
instead provide hooks to plug in a JVM from other parties, which
conveniently Sun, for example, is about to release.

Another interpretation is: "When you're struggling, identify your
core competence and focus on it." NSCP just laid off staff, so it
is looking for things to cut which are available elsewhere, such
as Java machines.

Remember, all key operating systems, all key browsers, and the Oracle
database itself will execute Java. That at least indicates a wide
arena for developers to sell into.
