Musya/MT - Before everybody gets totally bummed out about this news, lets make sure everybody understands the process. I haven't read The State's article yet, but I am quite sure all that happened was the SC House Ways & Means Committee voted to go along with Gov. Beasley's proposal to delete VGM money from the state budget.

This does NOT mean Beasley has won! Not by a long shot!!!!

There are still MILES to go in the legislative process before this idea becomes reality. This may still have other committees to get through and certainly must AT LEAST go to the full House for a vote. And that is just on the House side of things! The proposal must also survive a similar process in the Senate which, by all accounts, is likely to be much less sympathetic to Gov. Beasley on this issue. There is a long way to go on this one, folks.

I just finished reading The State's article about the House Ways & Means committee vote. I have spent over 10 years working for and with state government and regulated industry. A considerable portion of that time was spent dealing with political issues so, in my ever-so-humble opinion, I have a pretty good idea how politics works. There are a couple of VERY interesting things in there.

First, notice that somebody snuck anti-poker stuff into the bill at the last minute and UNANNOUNCED. It was done so quietly not even the industry lobbyists knew it was there. From what I have learned, industry lobbyist Drake is a real heavyweight. Guys like that don't miss much! It seems clear to me that Beasley's troops tried an end-run on the process and NEARLY got away with it. Beasley's hatchet-man, Gary Karr tried to put a very positive "spin" on the Senate's near-action but these circumstances tell me Beasley is scared to death of the Senate. If they are so confident the Senate is leaning their way, why pull a stunt like that? A clear sign of weakness if you asked me.

Second, I was particularly gratified to see the South Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association are weighing in on industry's side of the argument. My 10 years experience was all spent here in Florida on petroleum cleanup issues. The Florida Petroleum Marketers Association is a major political force in Florida and I'm sure it is in South Carolina, too. Beasley is going to have tough sledding against the video poker industry AND the petroleum industry.
