The Government Explores New Microsoft Charges: zdnet.com The use of announcements of so-called "vaporware." The question centers on whether Microsoft has illegally discouraged potential competitors by pre-announcing applications software long before it has been designed or proven. -- The misuse of compatibility standards. At issue would be whether the Redmond, Wash., company is using monopoly power to set proprietary standards for such new technology as DVD-ROM,the successor to the CD-ROM. "There are groups trying to set standards, and Microsoft is not playing ball," a source said. --Tying the operating system in the channel to computer makers. The government has been interested in ways that Microsoft may give price breaks or other inducements to computer makers to promote its software. Uhh, excuse me! What did Microsoft have to do with DVD? And just how does "Vaporware" fit into this? And if we're talking about the utter failure of DVD-RAM standards, why isn't the omnipotent DOJ pointing the finger at "the three factions." You know, those companies that were all ready to finalize a standard, and then Sony pulled out at the last minute because they were hoping for version 2 of BetaMax vs. VHS. So then everyone else joined into the fun--even Circuit City pitched in, Lord knows where they came from or why on Earth they think they have the clout to do anything. Sheesh.
