The 1.0+GHz processor IBM demonstrated today IS very important. It is an indication that the technology for building 1000 MHz microprocessors for general usage is that much closer to reality. More importantly the chip was manufactured using the cheaper.25 um technology same feature size as 604e and does not require .15um as previously reported.

It's important to keep in mind that the chip IBM demonstrated today is not really a full-functioned PowerPC processor. It does show that much of the technology required to built a 1.0GHz general purpose PPC is already in place.

What I'm looking forward to hearing from IBM is the 500MHz PPC750 with copper interconnect currently in the pipeline.

I wrote a little note on this topic earlier this morning at:

Louis it is a PowerPC 750 and relevant to AAPL

<< " A paper detailing the achievement will be presented February 6... IBM is also presenting two related microprocessor papers at the conference.

One describes a commercial multi-threaded RISC processor demonstrating IBM's ability to use innovative microarchitecture technology in a commercial application.

The other describes IBM's first use of copper technology on a product-level design with the PowerPC 750 microprocessor. " >>

My earlier post noted that IBM is 1st installing it in its RS/6000 line and available to desktops (AAPL's 750 PowerPC) by yr-end.

It beats INTC to the market by over a year and thanks for your email effort to set the NPR knuckle head(s) straight .

Can you imagine a former AAPL board member is Pres. of NPR !
