Since no one has answered, I'll take a shot.

It was a rumour that was floating in the breeze at about the same time as the one about IBM. A buyout by IBM appeared quite unlikely to many, yet takeover talk was unquestionably drifting around.

So someone (not here) started to do a little speculation on potential buyers yielding the GEAC name as a possible candidate (probably as part of a long list.) A couple of questions asked here and there, and a distorted word was spread quickly.

Just my opinion. Hope it helps.
