Joey - Re: "...any opinion you might have on why S3 picked up
the Exponential patents:"

This seems bizarre to me. SIII, once a dominant graphics chip maker is now struggling and they have very little presence in the high performance 3D graphics acceleration.

They are getting killed!

Maybe they had visions of grandeur in purchasing those patents - at a time when they should have been concentrating on designing new and better graphics chips - they didn't "stick to their knitting".

Despite the fact that S3 may have also hired some Exponential engineers, they would be fools to try and make a CPU to compete with Intel. Exponential was a complete FAILURE and THEY WROTE AND OWNED THE PATENTS and also burned through many millions of dollars.

My guess is they will try to use some of the concepts for advanced graphics or, God help us, file some frivolous law suits against Intel - for violating their "hard earned intellectual property".
