Wednesday February 4, 11:53 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: Northern Telecom Limited Guatemala Phone Operator Selects Nortel (Northern Telecom) to Expand Network $US 72 Million Project to Add Up to 150,000 CDMA Digital Wireless PCS Lines SUNRISE, Fla., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ - Guatemala's capital city will be the first to benefit from more readily available voice, data and enhanced calling services with a planned 150,000-subscriber expansion of the Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala (Telgua) network. Construction on the $US 72 million project, which will feature 1900 MHz CDMA wireless infrastructure from Nortel (Northern Telecom), is set to begin in Guatemala City in the first quarter 1998. Subsequent phases will add coverage in key regions throughout Guatemala including Puerto Barrios, Quetzaltenango, Escuintla and Puerto Quetzal. The new Nortel CDMA digital PCS network will provide both Nortel Proximity C fixed wireless access and mobile telephone services, supported from an integrated platform. The project is part of Telgua's plans to significantly grow its existing 430,000 network. ''Nortel's digital wireless technology will help us address the country's unsatisfied demand for modern telephony services in a cost-effective fashion,'' said Alfredo Guzman, general manager, Telgua. ''The short lead time required to implement the project and the success of our past ventures with Nortel were also important factors in our selection,'' Guzman said. Nortel CDMA digital wireless network solutions - deployed in more than 40 cities around the world - offer superior audio quality, enhanced calling features, value-added services and proven performance and reliability. Telgua will initially deploy voice switch-based services such as call waiting, calling line ID, credit card calling, and call forwarding, and will eventually be able to offer its customers advanced data services as well. ''Telgua's customer base will enjoy the same quality provided by Nortel wireless solutions throughout the world,'' said Dan Hunt, president, Nortel CALA (Caribbean and Latin America). ''This award, along with recent Nortel wireless wins in Brazil, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and Uruguay, further demonstrates operator confidence in Nortel's wireless solutions,'' Hunt said. Nortel works with customers in more than 150 countries to design, build and integrate their communications products and advanced digital networks. Customers include public and private institutions; Internet service providers; local, long-distance, cellular mobile and PCS communications companies; cable television companies; and utilities. Nortel's research capabilities around the world include a network of research and development facilities, affiliated joint ventures, and other collaborations fostering innovative product development and advanced design research in 16 countries.
