Korea 02-05-98 Banks to Start Gold Transactions This Month

Banks may start buying and selling gold from as early as late this month to further spur the ongoing gold donation fervor, finance sources said yesterday.

The government hopes that gold banking, to be processed without verifying whether the transactions are under real names, will bring out the big gold pieces that are still hiding in private closets despite the donation drive.

Banks have been dealing in gold but only in consignment with private businesses and in gold bars. Koreans have been selling their gold for export as a way of lifting their country out of the financial crisis.

Banks are expected to table a stipulation on gold transactions by Feb. 14, but the service will only be available at head and larger offices due to the shortage in the number of appraisers.
