After the Soviets pulled out in 1989 they left a puppet government in charge.
It lasted until 1992.
Almost immediately after the fall of the government began the warlord era.
That lasted until the Taliban won in 1996.
After that it was a low-intensity war until 2001.

After that it was mission accomplished, oh wait ;-O
