Yup. You cannot bribe someone to throw away centuries of culture, values, mores, and religious belief.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, the US thought that would work. Sorry, our bad. $8-Trillion down the drain, and countless lives ruined.

Neocons won and got their endless ME wars, but millions of lives were upended in the process over the course of 20-years of mindless, destructive war.

Cheney, Obama, and Hillary all bear responsibility for this mindless destruction. I put the two worst protagonists in this mess as Cheney and Hillary. One truly believed in the mission, and I think the other was politically calculating in what the mission would do for them. Both were wrong for doing so. People suffered and died as a result. It's sickening.

Meanwhile, Israel gains from everything the US does with no cost to themselves. Send them a bill for $8-Trillion. Let Sallie Mae collect it.

in 1967, I was in deployment to V.N. In June'67, there was the "Six Day War" Israel vs. whoever else Arab neighbors.
I was thinking maybe Israel instead of Viet Nam since we were in "process". Not weird, but the prevailing train of thought of that command was that a war in the middle- East
was unwinnable (also, people quietly forgot about the USS Liberty incident, the Israeli attack on the 8 June'67, during the Six-Day War that killed 34 of it's crew members)..
That gives credence to be aware of your allies, or whatever your allies think that is of most importance to them.

Afghanistan
no one is of mention
"Oh, East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet"--Rudyard Kipling

as far as today's issues, I strongly think the problem originated with Ronald Reagan. Screw the politics of today, but it was Reagan's cowboy diplomacy who so happily
funded the Mujahideen via the Saudis & Pakistanis. Why force the Soviets out of Afghanistan when they were failing a probable long war there?
Does anyone think in their right mind that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence are our friends?
Reagan was deluded.
