Yes... there is still that far happier outcome in an ending open to many of them... It is interesting to see how little, today, similarly disposed people in Afghanistan seem to value their careers? Even for committed apparatchiks.. lying flat seems a more prudent course... as the scythe approaches... at least for those not so thoroughly brainwashed as to have preserved some rudimentary survival instinct ? When people are threatening you with death... not because you have an unimportant desk job... but because you are engaged in committing crimes against humanity ? But I'm just an old softie... fondly remembering back to the days of my wasted youth... when there was still keen awareness that people were accused, and it was PROVED to them, that they were committing crimes against humanity... by "just following orders"... the penalty for which was hanging until dead? When balanced against a potential career risk if you were, say, to refuse to commit crimes against humanity and NOT impose medical experimentation on children ? Back in the day... you could actually make them pay attention... pause... and consider NOT committing war crimes... and risking death by hanging... for doing medical experiments on children... ? First, do no harm... to your career ? The NAZI's in the German medical system... were not inhibited ? They also kept careers intact... until not. And, the "they wouldn't do that" crowd... frogs in the pot... who are too dull, and so enthrall to "the system", to not be able to recognize that it is wrong when THEY THEMSELVES are being told they must conduct medical experiments on children... ? Key takeaway from Nuremberg: "I was just following orders"... is NOT a valid excuse. Apparently... its become a meme... the amusing bit of which is that it has been "debunked" by "fact checkers" ... who gleefully point out... the use of the photo of dead Nazi's is misleading... because THIS picture of dead Nazi's was taken in Kiev... not Nuremberg...
