Shares of NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS CORP jumped on market rumors
that the software company would be acquired by SUN MICROSYSTEMS
INC. Analysts said rumors have been recurring in recent weeks, as
Netscape's share price has dropped in recent months. Last month,
Netscape reported a loss in the fourth quarter and layoffs of
about 400 staffers, its first since its inception. But some
analysts who follow Sun said that such an acquisition by Sun,
while seemingly a good strategic fit on the surface, was not
likely to happen. (Reuters 05:22 PM ET 02/04/98) For the full text
