it isn't taking desert land and making it a forest as I think was implied, that can't work without irrigation.

That's not quite correct, either...

As the desert retreats... forests likely will advance... only that is not to be expected at the front of the retreat... rather than in the rear ?

Nature, again... doesn't care if you look for answers in the wrong place... and only find the wrong answers.

China's anti-desertification drive continues with positive results

What should be noted in the article... an error I noted somewhere here today but did not comment on...

The ASSUMPTION being made by some... that it is modernity and development that causes environmental damage ?

The opposite is true.

Economically unsuccessful people... work to exploit the environment more... amplifying the tragedy of the commons. Go look at the forests of Haiti, for example... compared to those of the Domincan Republic ?

Successful people and nations... improve the environment... not because anyone makes them... but because doing so makes sense ONLY when you can afford to...

So, the discussions of political alternatives in trying to FORCE reality to comply with what you want to be true... instead of looking to see what nature says is true... in order to facilitate adjusting your choices, and your behavior, to enable "what works" given how reality IS disposed... no mater how you wish it were ?

That's not an academic discussion. You can't make the wrong choices, based on ignorance... and get the right outcome...in what "should be"... only because you wish it.

Those who DO believe modernity and its economic successes... destroy rather than create... while the least successful are those who are the least impactful ? They are enormously ignorant... and therefore enormously dangerous... it allowed anywhere near the control of policy.

That's not saying modernity eliminates all sources of error ? NIMBY's...those same people... are the worst sources of errors being imposed... and then exported... ?
