First of all, the US failed to create a set of stakeholders who would fight for the status quo. For $2T and 20 years of time, you could have truly transformed the country.

Secondly, and narrowing this down to just the exit, the US could have started a planned exit of civilians and some support personnel months ago, instead of starting with military evacuation. That should have come last.

Thirdly, if you are going to negotiate with the Taliban, you have to do it within their own cultural rules rather than treating them like a western military command.

20 years there and nobody learned a thing about these people!
