Paul, good questions. The Unix units sold per year are declining. Even when there is growth in revenues, the % is declining. The NT growth is increasing at a very high rate. I am sure Oracle sees this as well. Analysts have warned that the enterprise DB market is saturated. I am sure that is why Oracle has pushed aggressively into applications. Although their apps biz is growing right now, it is growing on a stagnant base. The new growth is in the NT biz. As an investor, I am hoping for a similarly aggressive push with their DB, apps and tools so that the multiples are justified. NT is changing the economics of this traditionally high margin, direct sales DB market. I am sure Oracle is really worried that the NT platform is going to cannibalize their traditional market. But, I don't think they have a choice. Pricing their NT products the same as their Unix versions will not help for long if competitors are nipping at their heels with more cost effective offerings. MSFT may not yet match the high-end functionality just yet, but they are trying hard enough that customers and analysts are taking notice (and buying). At least Oracle is building up their indirect channel and marketing around the world to handle this new trend.
