I was looking at BIDU. The problem is that we can only buy ADRs that are basically 3rd tier derivatives of the actual stock. BABA, BIDU etc are trackers for B shares of A shares with no voting rights trading on an exchange that the Chinese government can cut off on a whim and they have been threatening to do just that recently. Your $100-200 stock could be worth $0 at any time with no recourse.
Also the reporting requirements are dark gray. Their books aren't GAAP or even ProForma.
Last, Xi is pounding the table about profit sharing and equally saying he will take money from any overly profitable enterprise to redistribute to the masses. While this may sound good to socialists, imagine what AMZNs stock price would do if Biden just took 10 Billion from their bank account that was slated to grow their business via new cloud data centers and just mailed checks to welfare recipients. Noble maybe but AMZNs stock price would crater, future growth would be hobbled, technology advances would halt etc.
Putting money in China right now is probably like investing in a new biotech company with high debt and no approved drugs yet. You could lose it all or you could hit a home run when they find the cure for cancer.
