Actually I don't make the assumption that people are educated or enlightened and neither does Game Theory. Quite the opposite. I assume that most people fall somewhere near the middle of the bell curve and that by definition that means the vast majority of the people are far from being enlightened or "good" as you think I perceive them to be.

There is in fact a chapter in the book I recommended titled "Does This Stuff Really Work". There the author compares the real world behavior with game theory predictions. And I assure you that the subjects were not enlightened game theorists.

Furthermore, you can see the real world outcomes readily. Take a look at South Sudan or Sierra Leon or any of the places that should be a Libertarian's (upper case L) wet dream where nobody taxes you or forces to you pay for services that you don't want. And you are free to make money any way you see fit. They are all shitholes. On the other hand, the Scandinavian countries are doing quite well and enjoy some of the best qualities of life despite their high taxes or lack of natural resources.

From a practical perspective, fair or not, if you want to be living in an educated prosperous society, then you have to contribute to the societal education and prosperity. You can choose to provide food, shelter, and healthcare for someone in prison or in his neighborhood. One of them is cheaper than the other.
