Society is always evolving. 300-years ago we were burning "witches." 150-years ago we owned slaves. 40-years ago we were dumping raw sewage and industrial waste into rivers, streams, and watersheds.

Commercials target their demographic, so they are more likely to look like the demos they are after.

Products that target a 16-34 demographic are going to appear quite different than those targeting a 55-plus demographic.

The idea behind social data gathering and big data crunching is that programs could be made with a limited target audience and still be successful. This hasn't really worked out in practice. Those I know in the entertainment industry indicate that they still have to reach a large audience to succeed in either a pay environment or advertising funded environment. It seems everyone tried to find a little audience via YouTube or something, they found the audience but generally didn't find financial viability.
