Plasma containment issues has been the barrier to date.

I remember this explosive subject running for a number of years... still is by the looks of it.

Money and funding does strange things to scientists.

A casual review of all science to date shows that most of the real big leaps forward were either by accident or with wax and string type of project funding.

There are some exceptions. The recent proof and demonstration of gravity waves was a well funded determined slog over the decades.
