Hi Ibexx, and ALL, HP to optimize Java for Merced

Hewlett-Packard said Wednesday that it will optimize Sun Microsystems' Java development language for the upcoming 64-bit Intel Architecture processor (IA-64), code-named Merced, as well as its systems based on the new chip.

HP said it is already working with Java developers on optimizing their Java applications to run well on HP's IA-64-based system. Those developers include Ariba Technologies, which develops operating resource management applications, and Web Logic, maker of the Java application server Tengah.

As part of the effort, HP will provide developers with planning, technical support, and developer tool sets to transition their solutions to the IA-64-based systems. To that end, HP is also establishing a Java/IA-64 porting and testing facility.

HP and Intel have been working since 1994 on Merced, which will not hit the market until sometime next year. Officially dubbed the Explicit Parallel Instruction Computing Technology, Intel's and HP's 64-bit processors will merge the instruction sets of today's CISC and RISC processors into one processor. This will allow processing of Windows- and Unix-based applications by the same CPU.

HP did not return phone calls seeking comment Wednesday but said it will detail its plans for supporting Java on Merced at the annual JavaOne Developer Conference to be held in March in San Francisco.

I wonder what NSM/AMD's response will be to Merced?? :-)

It's going to be fun (and profitable) to own Intel in 2000!

Ibexx (offtopic),
Re -- It was a merger of two big commodity pieces..

True. there also weren't any synergies (except for the ISP accounts).

Didn't Benhamou know that the size alone doesn't count!! :)
