<A> MCI Says FCC Correct In Rejecting BellSouth La. Application

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC) said the Federal Communications Commission "has done the right thing" in rejecting BellSouth Corp.'s (BLS) application to provide long-distance service in Louisiana.

In a press release Wednesday, MCI said BellSouth's application is "premature" and said the rejection is due to BellSouth's alleged failure to open its local market to competition.

MCI said "after two failed attempts at the FCC, either BellSouth doesn't know any better or it's simply continuing its attempts to game the competitive process."

BellSouth representatives were not immediately available for comment, but has earlier said it has met the requirements of the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Earlier Wednesday, the FCC overruled Louisiana regulators' determination that BellSouth had opened its network to competitors.
