ASND will add SS7 to RAC Remote Access Features Dress Up Data Gear By Joe McGarvey 4:00 PM EST Three leading remote access equipment makers said they will upgrade their offerings in the coming months with technology that will enable their data gear to support sophisticated telecommunications services, including call-back services, call forwarding, caller ID information and number portability. To bring these advanced features to the data and voice-over-data worlds, 3Com Corp., Ascend Communications Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. will add Signaling System 7 (SS7) capabilities to their equipment. SS7 is a technology used in telecom equipment that lets voice calls be set up and completed. It is also the protocol used to deliver advanced services, such as call forwarding. "This same technology [SS7] is what is used to deliver the intelligent telephone network," said Roland Acra, director of marketing for remote access at Cisco, which acquired SS7 technology with its recent purchase of LightSpeed International Inc. "There is a tremendous opportunity to do smart things to interplay between the dial-up network and what's going on at the voice level." Adding SS7 capabilities to data gear will be extremely attractive to access providers that offer voice services over the Internet, said Tom Jenkins at research firm TeleChoice Inc. In addition to potential long-distance savings associated with placing voice calls over the Internet, the ability to offer sophisticated features may convince enterprises to move their voice services to the Internet, he said."This is what the next-generation telco, like Level 3 [Communications Inc.] and others that are hoping to take advantage of IP [Internet Protocol]-based telephony, are looking for," Jenkins said. Level 3 is a new telephone company that will offer services using Internet communications protocols.[Let's see who will win the Level 3's contract] Cisco's Acra said the addition of SS7 technology to access equipment will enhance the delivery of data calls placed over the Internet.
