My impression was they got the military dogs out, but not all the dogs in the possession of the animal-rescue organizations. As a dog lover, I find it painful to even think about the subject.

If any of the military dogs had been left behind, we would have heard from their handlers by now via social media.

Couldn't agree more on your other points. That said, the US wasn't the only country screwing up the pull-out. Canada messed it up royally.
