Strong holiday sales performance resulted in minimal January clearance markdowns and a well-controlled inventory position. ''Ames is preparing to celebrate its 40th Anniversary year in March 1998 with exciting in-store events occurring during the first quarter to commemorate the opening of the first Ames store in 1958. Ames is working hard to continue its tradition of offering bargain merchandise at value-driven prices.''
