Ames Reports January Sales
ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 5, 1998--Ames Department Stores, Inc., (NASDAQ:AMES - news) today announced net sales of $143.4 million for the five weeks ended January 31, 1998, compared with net sales of $116.0 million for the four weeks ended January 25, 1997, an increase of 23.6 percent. Net sales for the 14-week fourth quarter ended January 31, 1998, were $768.8 million, compared with net sales for the 13-week fourth quarter ended January 25, 1997 of $707.0 million, an increase of 8.7 percent. Net sales for the 53-week fiscal year ended January 31, 1998, were $2.233 billion, compared with $2.162 billion in the 52-week fiscal year ended January 25, 1997, an increase of 3.3 percent.

Since fiscal 1997 was a 53-week fiscal year, sales for the company benefited from one additional week in each of the periods reported. If fiscal 1997 had been a 52-week year, net sales would have resulted in a 1.3 percent decrease for the four-week period and increases of 4.7 percent and 1.9 percent for the 13-week and 52-week periods, respectively.

Comparable-store sales for the four-weeks ended January 24, 1998 were $101.8 million, compared with $99.9 million in the same period last year, an increase of 1.9 percent. Comparable-store sales for the 13 weeks ended January 24, 1998 were $664.7 million, compared with $634.9 million in the 13-week year-earlier period, an increase of 4.7 percent. Comparable-store sales for the 52 weeks ended January 24, 1998 were $1.997 billion, compared with $1.956 billion last year, an increase of 2.1 percent. Comparable-store sales are based on 273 stores.

Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' President and Chief Executive Officer, said, ''We were pleased with January and fourth-quarter sales results. Sales showed strength in housewares, furniture, health and beauty care, and intimate apparel. Strong holiday sales performance resulted in minimal January clearance markdowns and a well-controlled inventory position.

''Ames is preparing to celebrate its 40th Anniversary year in March 1998 with exciting in-store events occurring during the first quarter to commemorate the opening of the first Ames store in 1958. Ames is working hard to continue its tradition of offering bargain merchandise at value-driven prices.''

Ames, which operates 298 stores in 14 Northeastern states and the District of Columbia, is the nation's sixth-largest discount chain, with annual total sales of $2.2 billion.
