Bicarbonate of soda is an alkali. Opposite of an acid.

Just a note to not get confused with the word "soda" the drink as opposed to "soda" the baking powder -g- Two different things.

"Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a base. This means that when people dissolve baking soda in water, it forms an alkaline solution. For example, a 0.1 molar solution of baking soda has a pH of around 8.3"

The phosphoric acid in the soda called coke is amazing. Dissolves teeth and polishes up pennies overnight. No problemo.
