I am not as cynical as I may sound. There are some who believe in what they say. Some of the original tea party, some of the neocons, and AOC and her cohorts all fall into this category.

There are also some who having spent a lifetime fighting for certain goals, cannot abandon that stance. It has become who they are by the virtue of practicing it that long. Many of the politicians that may seem principled fall into this category.
