THAI ARMY EXTENDS GOLD COLLECTION DRIVE TILL TOMORROW

Bangkok, Feb. 5 (ANI) : Overwhelmed by the public response, the Thai army, having collected 126 kgs. of gold in
donations to help the government overcome the country's financial crisis, has extended its gold collection drive till Friday.

The nine-day "Donate Gold to Save Nation" campaign, earlier scheduled to end on Tuesday, will now close tomorrow.

Campagin chairman Major General Lertrat Ratanavanich said hundreds of people had called to say they were willing to
contribute for the country and so it had been decided to extend the campaign by three days to enable them to make their
donations.

He expected another 10 kg. of gold to come till the close of the drive.

The campaign was led by some Thai military generals who showed the way by donating 15 sets of their revered gold
insignias, presented to them in honour of attaining their rank.

A 99-year-old woman, Barbara Chidell, from West Sussex in England, who was familiar with the Thai royal family, had
donated her most valuable souvenir - a gold locket and a gold coin presented to her by the Thai queen, Ratanavanich said.

People from all walks of life had contributed with gold bars, jewellery, gold rings, gold coins etc. during the campaign
which has been successfully launched also in other Asian countries, hit by financial woes.South Korean banks managed to
get more than 161 tonnes of gold worth over 1.5 billion dollars during a similar campaign in January.

The Thai army has decided to follow up its drive with another campaign to mobilise gold in exchange for government bonds
as soon as the necessary legal formalities are completed. (ANI)
