Cash cards are like CyberCash: right now, both are contenders to become another form of payment -- "And how will you be paying? Cash, charge, check, or _______?"

It's a layer above VRSN, because a cash card needs a secure protocol to work, no matter whether it's a smart card or a dumb card. So to answer your question, no, they're not competing, because no matter whether cash cards succeed or fail there will always be something that depends on the secure medium of the kind that VRSN provides.

If you think cash cards really will catch on, then by all means get in. But they're competing in a market having more contingencies than the one VRSN is in.
