"The rebuilding took place after Germany... and Japan was totally destroyed" It wasn't just the infrastructure. The will to resist had been beaten out of them by 6 or 7 years of constant war. There was no fight left in them.

The point so many seem to be missing is that, as mentioned, education leads to liberal ideology and liberal ideology leads to humanity. What was going on in Afghanistan because of the infrastructure we had set up is that the people were becoming educated en masse and that was leading to an increasingly liberal country and increasing humanity. Which was spreading to the entire region organically. And boy do they need it. I think we would have been better off continuing to nurture that growth. The amount of money we have given to the rich, with the obscene tax cuts over the last 20 years and that stupid war in Iraq, with so little protesting, would have funded a 100 efforts in Afghanistan at this point. We had spent the big money and effort getting to this point and the returns were increasing. As well, this may have given the congress and presidency to the Republicans and should have been avoided if for no other reason than that. And what do we do if we are attacked again like in 9/11, go back in and start over, only this time it will cost so much more and who will trust us? Leon Panetta, past head of the CIA, thinks that is what will happen! I don't think people have thought this through.
