Really OT - people often draw parallels between Buddhist nomenclature and Western ones. Words like karma and fate or nirvana and heaven are often used interchangeably. But there are subtle but very important distinctions lost in the translation.

Heaven is a reward that is given to you for obeying God's scripture. Nirvana on the other hand is something you achieve based on your own conduct. An analogy would be that a diploma is something given to you for completing your homework and handing it on time, whereas industry (or academic) distinction is what you earn after years of honing and proving your expertise.

Similarly, fate is what has been preordained for you. But karma is simply facing the consequences of your actions.

I much prefer the Buddhist perspective over the Judeo-Christian one.
