You are right related to statues and symbols cut in stone they are a reminder of history and the acts of people/rulers, god or bad.

Statues bring up recollections and force us to think and evaluate what happen in the past and to arrive to our own conclusions.

Removing statues or stone symbols is barbaric and idiotic in an effort to erase what humans did bad or good.

Same applies to all the WWI and WWII European memorabilia or Statue of Lenin or Stalin in Russia they should be a reminder of evil interpretation of human ideals or ideology god or bad - but IMHO better to have a reminder in your face than to learn history which is always written by the victorious party and never accurate.
