[modems]

who is the "you" in your example? a consumer or a CO?

Mark --

I'm the last person to answer technical questions, but as I understand it, if something is sent to you (me) from an analog modem, the CO has to have a corresponding modem. From that point it can be sent to my modem in whatever speed I can receive --- provided, of course, the CO has it. I actually think there are enterprise situations where information isn't routed through the CO, but over a LAN and this is where you have to have matching modems. Correct me if I'm wrong. The same with faxes and credit card exchanges and so on.

I suggest you call the company and get it from the horse's mouth.

Reading over my post, I do think I said it wrong --- as I know once information gets to the CO, it can be routed to a modem that doesn't correspond to the sender's.

Thanks for making me get it right.
