For some info on where Java is headed. Java will enable devices, services, applications that you can't even imagine now. And what will serve up the data to these devices and apps? Probably not SQL*Server. But I will agree with you that the pace seems a bit slow relative to the hype, and people legitimately have the right to ask 'Where's the beef?'

Take a look at these JavaOne conference abstracts:

Java Technology Enabled Webphones

Abstract: The familiarity of the telephone as a
reliable device in the home has rewarded it with
its likely emergence as the first of many
Java-based "information appliances" scheduled
for availability this year. As a testament to the
Java platform reliability, scaleability, security,
and usability, many of the new webphone
(internet screenphone) vendors are including
Java platform support in their products. This
panel will provide the first comprehensive look
at these compelling devices, and give developers
and service providers an opportunity to begin
contemplating application development for this
hot new device category.

The Java Platform Revolution: Year Three

Speaker: Lew Tucker, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Abstract: The Java technology momentum is
moving at an incredible pace. Since its
introduction at the SunWorldTM event in May of
1995, Java technology has been embraced by
over 700,000 developers, and thousands of
applications are now available. Both large and
small companies are rapidly adopting Java
technology (the language, platform, and related
devices and systems) for a strategic advantage
over competitors. This session will review the
past year and look ahead towards what is to
come, highlighting the impact that Java
technology may have on the future of our
industry.

Java Technology Devices: Beyond the
Desktop

Abstract: The scaleability of the Java platforms
has promised the proliferation of Java
technology computing onto non-traditional
computing devices such as wireless phones,
internet screenphones, handheld computers,
set-top boxes, and even smartcards or rings.
This session will provide the opportunity to hear
directly from manufacturers who have
announced products in the consumer device
space and their reasons for electing to include
Java platform support in their devices.

Java Technology in Wireless
Communications

Abstract: When The Network Is The
ComputerTM, the network doesn't even have to
be physically connected. This session will
explore some of the forays Java technology has
been making into the wireless industry. From
wide area networks such as cellular to local
area networks and in-building penetration, Java
platforms are enabling the extension of
traditional computing networks. This panel will
explore some of the wireless application
scenarios already extending productivity and
efficiency in various industries.

Economist magazine claims Java needs another year or so to be fully competitive with MSFT; thereafter, it will be a two horse race.

This may explain MSFT's frantic grab for everything today, before the air goes out of their balloon.
