We'd have to agree on "value" - a difficult problem to solve has value (maybe not to you personally) but it is a nugget of work that can't be forged. You should read up on blockchain as a ledger system and cryptos (they are not all the same) as a "store of value". The energy use is incidental in creating anything of value - you don't believe a hard to solve problem is a thing of value but you use them every time you use "https://somesite" or log into your bank account.
