I specifically said western Democracies as that is the metric of civilization I was using.

E.g. we are the last western democracy to still allow capital punishment.

Primarily because of false convictions and uncertainty and racial/class bias of judgment I still favor abolishing the death penalty nationally.

Rhetorically parsing the statement to "western democracies" isn't really fair since that's basically only North America and Europe (the European Union banned it) -- not really a fair sample of the modern world.

Taiwan, Japan and South Korea are considered democracies and maintain capital punishment.

Fact check me, but I believe Japan still uses hanging for its executions.

South Korea maintains the death penalty, has a lot of people on "death row"-- though they have not used it for many years.

Countries that have the death penalty include:

Afghanistan
Antigua and Barbuda
Bahamas
Bahrain
Bangladesh
Barbados
Belarus
Belize
Botswana
Chad
China
Comoros
Cuba
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Dominica
Egypt
Equatorial Guinea
Ethiopia
Guyana
India
Indonesia
Iran
Iraq
Japan
Jamaica
Jordan
Kuwait
Lesotho
Libya
Malaysia
Nigeria
North Korea
Oman
Pakistan
Palestinian Territories
Saudi Arabia
Singapore
Somalia
South Sudan
St Kitts and Nevis
St Lucia
St Vincent and the Grenadines
Sudan
Syria
Taiwan
Thailand
Trinidad and Tobago
Uganda
United Arab Emirates
United States of America
Vietnam
