Re: Alpha 21264 The media seem to have a tendency to under-report anything pertaining to DEC. In particular, in discussing microprocessors, they always seem to forget that DEC is the leader when it comes to speed and will remain in that position for some time. This report talks of the new IBM and DEC chips not "being commercially available until after the turn of the century," but the DEC press release states otherwise. See the following from Dow-Jones on Monday, Feb. 2: <<<MAYNARD, Mass. (Dow Jones)--Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) unveiled an upgraded 64-bit Alpha microprocessor architecture, the Alpha 21264, which its says eclipses the 1,000-Megahertz speed barrier. . . .. The company expects to begin shipping the Alpha 21264 processor in the summer of 1998. >>> Intel's Merced chip will not be available until late '99, but which time DEC (Compaq) will have announced new and even faster chips!
