Mom is republican and dad is a Democrat so hearing both sides isn't new. My mom was pro gay a long time ago because it cost a lot of money to train gay soldiers who were kicked out. For her it was about the cost of being anti gay. Dad is the core. He tells us the big stuff; no racism, no BS on one religion being better than another, etc. He's on the quiet side but when he talks we all listen. IMO, he's brilliant. He sees things others miss. My dad starts the debate. It never gets heated. We talk. I imagine it's what everyone did before talk radio and fox news. Maybe not.
