Hong Kong Savors Return of Chicken After Flu

By Peter Humphrey

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong residents clicked their chopsticks with a new-found joy Sunday as freshly slaughtered chickens were available for the first time in six weeks after the end of
an import ban to stamp out the "bird flu."

Butchers started slaughtering chickens for the dinner table and restaurants put fresh fowl back on their menus after the first 38,000 birds arrived from mainland China Saturday.

Live fowl markets reopened after grudgingly adopting strict new hygiene standards to prevent a recurrence of the deadly H5N1 virus which jumped to humans and killed six people.....................

Was this fowl pestilence your wake-up call?

Cluckmandias

(with apologies to Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley - 1818)

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: 'Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a feathered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled beak, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear --
'' My name is Cluckmandias, rooster of roosters:
Look on my talons, ye Mighty, and despair!''
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal beak, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
