William, I basically ignore charts. I do, however, spend a great deal of time analyzing a company's financials, because I don't want to put my money into a company that's weak or suffers from some operational defect that is discoverable through financial analysis.

I also spend a great deal of time reading about the industry in general, because even if I haven't picked the best stock in a growth industry, picking a good one is generally enough. For example, which is a better investment: DELL or CPQ. If the computer market is growing strongly, both companies will be in a position to benefit because growth will not be coming at the other's expense.
