I volunteer at our local museum during the summer. this year, on our last day, a group of grade 4/5 students and their teacher came through. the students were required to sign the guest register. I was shocked to see the mostly printed (chicken scratching) that passed for signatures.

Yeah, it is surprising how few engineers today have the manual arts my friend (and multiple patent holder) had in our youth. While I landed in software, I've welded, drafted, machined, and worked in electronics, physics, chemistry, and aviation. Back in the 80's I was sort of shamed and marginalized as a "generalist". This kind of experience gives one a holistic view that you are seeing as missing. Thanks for the insight. And thanks for making a difference - I assume you are retired or nearing retirement?
