Good points. My argument, however, is not that nothing is better. Much, very much, is much better.

But any huge generalization of the sort you are selling needs to take into account the obvious counter arguments. And then make your point. I'm not persuaded (presumably the reason you post your opinion is because you want to persuade) unless there is some sort of counter argument enveloping the obvious counter points.

For my own money, I think the better part of wisdom is to hold both points together as unresolvable contradictions. Some things are better; some things are the same; and some things are worse.

As for your point about education being better, completely agree. I don't see how anyone could contest it. But whether that translates into less violence, less wars, less ethnic cleansing is problematic. Germany, before Hitler, was thought to be the cultural heart of Western civilization (well, France was also in that conversation). And look what happened.
